And this, Mycroft thinks, is why sitting vigil at his brother’s bedside was a terrible idea. A conversation in the hospital.

Lovely one shot that shows their brotherly ties very well.
And this from an author well-known for rather dark scenes.

What's in a Name

Title: What's in a Name
Author: Clara
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Lestrade
Warning: PG
Length: Short
Status: Completed

In a misguided attempt at altruism, Lestrade sets John up with some bloke named Sherlock. Only, he doesn't know anybody named Sherlock. In fact, he's not entirely sure that the name Sherlock even exists.

LJ

Brilliant oneshot, I especially loved how Lestrade went on to shout "Sherlock" in public because he was that desperate to find him. Or rather, "one."

Baker Street

Title: Baker Street
Author: StarMarple
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock, Molly
Warning: PG, AU
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

John Watson, lately of the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers, has returned from war with a limp, a bullet in the shoulder, and very little in the way of job prospects. He's down to his last dime and about to be kicked out of his bedsit when he runs into his old classmate Mike Stamford who insists on taking him for pastry and a coffee at a bakery located at 221 Baker Street, where he meets a very unusual pastry chef.

AO3

A yummy story in which Sherlock is a pastry chef who owns a strange but good pastry shop.
You really should have a sweet tooth for this. There's not much up and down. It's more about a wonderfully fluffy universe. In which there is a lot of cake. And biscuits. And don't forget the tea. To compliment the biscuits.

Finally

Title: Finally
Author: Wind_Ryder
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Victor, Sherlock, John
Warning: PG
Length: Short
Status: Completed

Sherlock's friend Victor Trevor stops by uninvited, and John isn't happy. He hates everything about Victor, but that's not what bothers him the most. What bothers him the most is that he's slowly realized that he might have feelings for Sherlock, and Victor might be in the way.

AO3

Such a sweet, fluffy oneshot. I quite liked the explanation why Victor calls Sherlock "Bee" and nobody else does. It somehow... fits. If the writers ever introduce Victor Trevor to the show, they better do it like this ~ Wind_Ryder shows how it's done.

Characters: Sherlock, John, Harry
Warning: PG, childfic
Length: Medium
Status: Ongoing

Sherlock Holmes discovers family he never knew he had, and John Watson finds a child living in the cupboard.

A nice crossover. I love how Sherlock trains Harry like a pet to react to another name. It's just... really funny at times. And John's hilarious, the way he accepts this madness.

The Only Emperor

Title: The Only Emperor
Author: coloredink
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock
Warning: PG, AU
Length:, Medium
Status: Completed

It never occurred to Sherlock Holmes that an ice cream shop might attract children.

AO3

Sherlock is a very eccentric cook who is specialized in ice cream flavors. John is a sous-chef. Now he's distributing ice cream.
You think that sounds boring?
Believe me. It isn't. The Only Emperor is one of the sweetest, fluffiest AUs I've ever read. The characters are are still recognizable, and yet they have been completely taken from their usual surroundings.

Ice Man

Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mary
Warning: PG, PTSD (John)
Length: Medium

In the days after, John sits.
He does not eat.
He does not drink.
Outside the London bustle swells and ebbs. His ears hear, but do not listen.
Before him rests the empty chair.
His mind is white.

AO3

Part of a Series.
I read the other story. Nice but this one's better by far.
The usual Post-Reichenbach fanon. John grieves, finds Mary, loves Mary, Sherlock returns, Mary is discarded.
I liked that Mary told John "No". It shows some sort of backbone. I wish she'd have done it in canon, too. But meh, she's rather selfish, so no chance there.

The Long Game

Title: The Long Game

When Moriarty's plan to take out Sherlock and John in the swimming pool fails, John finds himself drawn into an even more complicated - and potentially deadly - game.

AO3

Yay! Somebody sends John on a tresure hunt with Sherlock at stake. Great :) Usually it's the other way around. The pacing is at times a bit slow because we don't get to see much interaction. It's more about John's inner perspective. I still liked it but some might find it a bit boring at times.

A Finger Slip

Title: A Finger Slip
Author: Pawtal
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, Lestrade
Warning: PG
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

In which John sends a text to the wrong number by mistake. Little does he know the person he just texted will impact his life more than he could have imagined.

AO3

The SMS exchanges are very funny at times. I like Lestrade in here, and Sherlock's all flustered and not sure how to approach John later on. I liked that.
The end was sad - John leaving, well...
There's still an epilogue missing, until then... ongoing.
A different author wrote a "fanfiction" on this, with Pawtal's approval. Katzedecimal's A Slip of The Finger
Personally, I like the original one more but for the sake of completeness... and it isn't a bad fanfiction, no! I just like the original better.

Meeting Mary

Title: Meeting Mary
Author: Snommis
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, John/Mary, Lestrade
Warning: PG, illness(Sherlock), drug abuse (John - unwanted)
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

Sherlock gets himself hospitalised, John meets Mary and more than one case turns out to be depressingly simple. Contains some references to several ACD stories, among these ‘The Sign of the Four’. No one will gain a wife from this, though.
“I think it’s time you accepted the fact that he’s more than just your best friend,” Lestrade interrupted.
“Please, not you as well,” John sighed heavily. “We’re –“
“No, no. Hang on. That’s not what I meant,” Lestrade immediately cut him off, holding his hands up in a placating gesture.
“What do you mean, then?”
“You love him.”
John did not even think about arguing the point – it would only defeat the purpose of seeking advice. “And?”
“And I think you need to sit down and figure out whether or not you have anything left to give that isn’t already Sherlock’s.”
John felt his shoulders tensing in protest, but damn it if that did not hit close to home.

At AO3

This is so beautiful, I just have to quote something:

Would you kindly consider never leaving my sight? Why? Oh, because I'm a possessive, obsessive and arrogant addict who has decided that I need you a lot like oxygen and puzzles. So if you wouldn't mind terribly I'll just go ahead and deprive you of any semblance of a normal life. In fact, of any kind of life that doesn't revolve so entirely and exclusively around me that I'm allowed to take anything I feel like, whenever I feel like it without ever offering anything in return. Problem?
(Sherlock on his feelings for John)

“If I were to stay here for the rest of my life, would you… would it be with you? Or would I one day wake up and find you gone because you’ve grown bored with London or something?”
(John propositioning - in other words: Won't you get bored with me?)

“It wasn’t supposed to do that. It was not supposed to do that. Uh… John? You might want to open the windows. It’s uh – slightly toxic,"
(Sherlock, when one of his experiments explodes)

This story unites two things I consider very essential in Sherlock fiction:
John accepts himself. John Watson in the series is struggling between the normalcy (girlfriends) and living, breathing, in a way. I am not saying that John is gay or any of that sorts. That's wishful thinking. But he keeps on entangling with women while he does not really want a relationship himself. He likes the idea of relationships, though. I believe that the ultimate step for him will be accept that truth. That he doesn't have to hide behind masks. Because that's not who he is.
And the second aspect I consider essential is Sherlock's acceptance of his own faults. Sherlock in the series is aware of his short-comings (e.g. with Irene, or when he asks whether his behavior was 'not good') but he does not accept them. It's not a matter of improving, god beware, no. That'd be out of character. It's a matter of coming to terms with himself. Which he hasn't. Sherlock's quirky, he's arrogant, rude. John has introduced self-consciousness into his life. And I believe that the ultimate step resulting out of this will be acceptance of his short-comings and kindness. Not always. Most often not. But the ability to respect other people's mistakes (sometimes). Right now, he doesn't have the ability yet. But he's scraped at the surface, e.g. when he saved Irene.
I put these two aspects out there as an expectation. As a fellow author, I read characters differently than others might do. To me, Sherlock's story will be "over" when this happens. Good fanfiction depict these two traits. The authors picked up the essential role they play in each other's life.

This story includes both aspects.
Okay, I'll never become BFF with Mary. She wasn't annoying in here, so I guess that'll be the nearest to a love confession she'll ever get from me. To me, she's just another of John's boring girlfriends. Where's the difference between Jeanette and Mary? Just because she's canon doesn't make her special. Or more understanding. Or more interesting. Not to me. And I am glad that this author did not insist on describing her as such a wonderful person, and so on. Yes, Sherlock put up with her. Because she was slightly more agreeable than others before her. But she had her flaws, too, and didn't push. That's why I can respect her in this fiction. I can respect her as a woman.

Following On

Title: Following On
Author: Loopy456
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock
Warning: PG, injury (John)
Length: Short
Status: Completed

‘Well,’ says Sherlock, throwing the empty bottle down into the foot well. ‘I did think I was going to die.’
‘You thought you were going to die?’ Donovan chokes out. ‘I knew you were a freak, but are you really so self-centred? I thought he was supposed to be your friend, and instead of worrying about him you’re worrying about yourself? Did you push him in front of you or something?’
When something happens to John, Sherlock doesn't understand why everyone's so surprised that he was worried for his own life.

I like the second chapter's turnabout. Really, I was expecting something deeper but it still surprised me. I had expected a different, a psychological direction and got rewarded with this emotional revelation.

Far Beyond a Promise Kept

Title: Far Beyond a Promise Kept
Author:  oliversnape
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape, Harry, Dumbledore
Warning: PG, mention of child abuse, Horcrux, character death (Harry)

Snape never wanted anyone to know of his promise to Dumbledore, but has realised that he can protect Potter much better by taking a less passive role in the boy's training. Actually liking Harry Potter has never been part of his plan.

(Also on ff.net)

Well, I love oliversnape. Great author, great stories. Very forthcoming, too. I've had personal contact with oliversnape and it was rather inspiring. This novel-length story is very detailed and shows some typical signs of his craft: Snape meddling with "modern muggle devices", playing nintendo, etc. In a way, this seems OoC, but to me, this gives it a realistic vibe. This is not OoC,  this is just oliversnape's Snape. And that's fine.
Besides, nobody else would get me to read a story in which Harry is renamed into "John". This spins from year 3 to the end of year 4.
