No one knows where the virus started. No one knows how to stop it, either. But Sherlock will find a solution. He always does. Or he'd better, because otherwise he's going to be short a flatmate.
AO3
That's one story to enjoy angst at its finest. The characterization is superb, and the setting just screams challenge. I did not have high expectations when I began to read it, but this story captivated me after the first chapter.

Sherlock is a half-faerie. It is not easy to live under ancient laws.

I really love the embedded fantasy elements. And how John reacts. You feel the love in there. The author truly loves BBC Sherlock.

A fluffy fic in which John tells Sherlock that he loves him. Too bad Sherlock interprets it as romantic love. And John is not so sure if Sherlock isn't right...
Basically: John does a lot of soal finding, meanwhile Sherlock finds the balance in their relationship.

A very introspective work. The multiple personalities are John's weakness just as much as they are his strength. I abhor stories that either romanticize or dramaticize disorders. This one is a very good attempt at showing "what if."

John Watson believes one day he'll just fade.
That he'll drown in the black spaces of his mind, and that one day he will no longer exist. It's always been like this, the dark spots marking out moments in his life he can't remember. Where for just a moment he's someone else. Having a Dissociative identity disorder, he can't even be entirely sure he's really who he says he is.
Then he meets Sherlock Holmes. A brilliant detective who when he looks at you can read your entire life story. John is immediately fascinated and afraid, half-wondering if maybe Sherlock can see the other personalities in him and half terrified of the thought of him finding out. Becoming his flatmate seems at once to be a wonderful and horrible idea. Yet as John's Blackouts become more and more severe and his other personalities begin to truly awaken and show themselves with Sherlock's help, the two soon discover that sometimes even the kindest person can harbour a demon best left untouched inside of them.
Because not all of John's other personalities play nicely. and some may be hiding secrets best left undisturbed.....

T'is a difficult patient.
There is no way to deny that the mood is very gloomy. The feelings are raw. The characterization very fragile, broken.
Still, I think the end is still too raw. I missed some feel good moment.
I liked it when John came around and asked just the questions that bothered me from the beginning of their, well, affair?
And I have a hard time to decide against labelling this a PTSD (Sherlock) story. I think it's there, but they don't talk about it. So it's no big part of the story.

Brilliant AU. Truly. The universe is fascinating, and the plot is a bit thin for the great setting, but the characterizaton was on the spot.
Mycroft as a baddie, well, okay. I prefer him to be besotted with Sherlock but he is a terrifying power. I buy that because it's an AU.

Characters: Victor/Sherlock, Mycroft, John

Length: Medium
Status: Completed
After this qote it seems unbelievable to state just this: I like Victor Trevor. Yes, I do. This work made me like this character so much that I now prefer it to Sherstrade. It is interesting how a somewhat gullible, inexperienced, young Sherlock winds up with a blind guy as a boyfriend. While not much related to their relationship is depicted, the author shows the magic behind this pairing. The utter completion Sherlock finds in that boy that accepts him, that is fascinated in him and, most of all, loves him, no explanation needed. I consider this special; with Sherlock/Irene, it's about attraction and double entendre. With Sherlock/Lestrade, it's about amicable silence and a deep understanding of one's needs. With Johnlock, it's about trust and admiration (both ways). All of these, I can see as friendship relationships. With Sherlock/Victor, I can't. To me, the idea of Victor is deeply linked to Sherlock's first experience with love given to him without any ties (family, work). I cannot see them as mere friends. I cannot. And this is one of the two works that have shaped my concept of Victor.

When Sherlock Holmes told John Watson he didn't have friends, it wasn't the same as saying he never had.
In 1995, he steps on a dog's paw in a darkened chapel. The resultant wound is a minor thing, but the friendship he forges with Victor Trevor will leave scars for years to come.
Difficult, well-done work and a meta on Sherlock's behavior towards other people.
I took the liberty to quote something - which has not as much impact out of context, but I think it sums up the story's main point - how Sherlock's self-esteem was crushed enough to distrust people as much as he does.“I’ll grant you that,” Victor says, exhaling slowly. “I’ve never had to work so hard for a shag.
[...] Did I say that I loved you? Well. Maybe I meant it. Maybe I didn’t.”
[...]You repel me."(Victor to Sherlock after Sherlock deduced that Victor's father committed murder which ends in a fight)

Title: Things Unsaid
Author: backarapper, GameboyRocker
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, John/Mary
Warning: PG-13, drug abuse, murder(Sherlock)
Length: Novella
Status: Ongoing
When Sherlock finally does something unforgivable, John leaves London. A month later, he gets a call from Lestrade that Sherlock isn't eating, won't leave his flat, and is back on drugs. Sherlock refuses to get clean, but will John's return be enough to help him? What feelings will they develop for each other along the way? Slow Johnlock.
At AO3
I am a bit doubtful about this one. I like the writing style and the main idea but Mary's an eye sore. I love it when she understands the boundaries of the connection she and John can have. It'll never be as strong as the one he shares with Sherlock (not just as a slasher, I like it in gen stories that way, too). Here, she doesn't get the picture. She's understanding but does not understand. And thus, John doesn't get it either. He's not really seeing the relationship for what it is.
I also thought John unkind at more than one point in this story. Not rude, simply unkind. Sure, Sherlock's on drugs, a pain in the ... and seriously not complying. That doesn't make John's behavior right, though. He begins to see through himself, so I intend to follow that story. I believe the authors were setting it up this way for just this turnabout. And THAT could be very interesting.

Characters: John/Sherlock, John/Mary, Lestrade
Warnings: NC-17, slash, violence, murder(Victor Trevor), violence, injury(John)
Length: Novella
Status: Completed
On the three year anniversary of Sherlock's death, John finds something unusual in his flat. He shouldn't be so thrilled to be finally going mad. But is he? Oh god, yes.
At AO3
Loved that one. Okay, I really was applauding when Mary left (not my case, I've seen her interpreted more to my liking) but seriously, John and Sherlock are just the right mix of messed-up, loneliness and angst. The story doesn't span a big time frame, thus the narrative is very direct and precise. It's about an event, not a character story. WendyBird became one of my favorite authors within the first two chapters. The subtle method to tell Sherlock's return captivated me.

Title: Caledonian Road
Author: omen1x2
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: OMC/Sherlock, John/Sherlock
Warning: NC-17, rape, mention of drug abuse, murder (John)
Length: Short
Status: Abandoned
John goes to prison for burglary, and meets a fascinating, broken genius. He wants nothing more than to just keep to himself for the entirety of his sentence, but something about this man gets under his skin.
At AO3
I really should be doing something different at the moment XD but I kind of want to update this. The bookmarks keep gathering on my phone.
Well, this is interesting due to the setting. I once read a similiar fanfiction depicting Harry and Draco in prison, but it wasn't as interesting as this. Remarkably about Caledonian Road is the fact that John is rather dominant. He is sure of what he does, even if it's not actually wise. This kind of helps the story to develop.

A Year like None Other
It all started with a letter from home and family. Except, Harry doesn't really have either, does he? He's about to get them. A Snape-adopts-Harry story providing an alternate 6th year.
760 k words.
II:
A Summer like None Other
Family isn't everything, as Harry, Snape, and Draco discover in this sequel to A Year Like None Other. How will a mysterious mirror and a surprising new relationship affect a father and his two sons?
220 k words.
III:
A Family like None Other
During his final year at Hogwarts, relationships will splinter as Harry confronts secrets long-buried and faces the greatest challenge of them all.
380 k words.
I have to admit: I haven't read A Family like None Other yet. Not completely. Will do so soon, just haven't got the time. The series is an excellent read, though. It is rather logical, in character (and if it isn't, there's a good explanation for it). This is... yucks. No, not the story! Rather the murder and the case. I quite liked Sherlock in here, though John got on my nerves. Especially when he hurt Sherlock's feelings, when he basically trampled over him just after having fucked him. Author: pennypaperbrain
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock
Warnings: NC-17, BDSM, slash, mental illness (bipolar!Sherlock), suicidal (John + Sherlock), murder
Length: Novella
Status: Completed
Three months after his best friend and unrequited crush apparently committed suicide in front of him, John’s life has been turned upside down again by a voicemail from Sherlock in the US, saying he is covertly tracking down the remains of Moriarty’s network, and asking John to join him.
Two days on, John is on his way to meet Sherlock in Malta. Everything seems to have changed between them: not only is Sherlock being overtly affectionate in his texts, but he quite explicitly wants sex. But there’s just one problem (apart from the small matter of the international assassins etc): Sherlock’s behaviour is getting steadily stranger, even by his standards. John starts to worry his friend may be on drugs again…
At AO3
Personally, I read the second story first and was intrigued. The first one is not necessary to understand the characters' motivations or reasons. The second one stands on its own quite beautifully. I read the first story afterwards and actually was kind of disappointed. It is nicely written but lacks the epic feeling Malta Bright incorporates.
My resumée: read Malta Bright, read it, read it. It contains wonderful done bipolar!Sherlock, medical!John, a dire situation, guns, a healthy portion slash and kink.

Renegades
Title: Renegades
Author: augustbird
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock
Warning: R, slash, murder, drug abuse
Length: Medium
Status: Completed
Sherlock Holmes takes down Moriarty’s syndicate. He also takes John Watson with him.
At AO3
Written by the same author as "Glass, Tempered Steel".
I loved Sherlock as a "consulting criminal" with loyal John at his heels. This story has probably introduced me to "dark!Sherlock", an area I so far haven't ventured into.

Can't Rewind Now We've Gone Too Far
Title: Can't Rewind Verse
Author: Basser
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft
Warning: NC-17, Drug Abuse, Mention of Slash, murder (Siger), suicidal (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing
At age nineteen, Sherlock Holmes dropped out of university to become a drug addict.
At AO3
I really enjoyed:
Pt 1: Internet Killed the Video Star
Pt 2: Can't Rewind Now We've Gone Too Far
Never heard of this author before. Mostly active in Detective Conan and Sherlock Fandom - as I've been out of the former for some time, and just getting into the latter, this is barely a surprise.
Writing style is rather promising - drug abuse stories often glorify the abuse, tend to become overkills. Here, the balance between Sherlock's downward spiral and his mood swings is described beautifully. I am rather critical of drug abuse stories because I don't like them oversimplifying things. Here, the author pays attention to the negative aspects, but also to what keeps addicts doing it (duh, the addiction, but also how they feel about it). Mycroft's meddling seems kind of canon as well, and I can imagine Sherlock as an angry teenager.
