Sun that Burns on a Cloudy Day

Title: Sun that Burns on a Cloudy Day
Author: InsaneTrollLogic
Fandom: Sherlock

Characters: Mycroft, Sherlock, John, Lestrade
Warning: AU
Length: Short
Status: Completed

Sherlock and John are rebels in a dystopian world.

AO3

AU with Mycroft who has taken over the world. Very in-character but darkish. He is still Mycroft, and Sherlock and John are Sherlock and John. Mycroft is simply guided by other moral concepts. His brother, however, will always be his world.

Fandom: Sherlock

Characters: John/Sherlock, Lestrade, Mrs Hudson, Jim
Warning: PG, AU
Length: Short
Status: Completed

There is a swan, and he's not named Sherlock. And there is a duck, and he's not named John.

AO3

Utterly cute story of Roadblock (Sherlock) the Swan, and Johnny the Duck. And Norbury, their peachick.

What's in a Name

Title: What's in a Name
Author: Clara
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Lestrade
Warning: PG
Length: Short
Status: Completed

In a misguided attempt at altruism, Lestrade sets John up with some bloke named Sherlock. Only, he doesn't know anybody named Sherlock. In fact, he's not entirely sure that the name Sherlock even exists.

LJ

Brilliant oneshot, I especially loved how Lestrade went on to shout "Sherlock" in public because he was that desperate to find him. Or rather, "one."

Major Pieces

Fandom: Sherlock

Characters: John, Sherlock, Lestrade

Sherlock knew that he could thoroughly rely upon John Watson's moral sense. And that's why he knew that Lestrade was wrong, wrong, wrong.

AO3

Casefic with John as the main suspect.

A Week Is just Seven Days Isn't It?

Title: A Week Is just Seven Days Isn't It?
Author: scifigrl47
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock, John, Lestrade
Warning: PG-13, injury (Sherlock)
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

When John heads overseas for a week, Sherlock's forced to fend for himself. It goes about as well as anyone could have anticipated. Which is to say, very, very poorly. Don't worry, things'll be fine in just seven days.

FF

Simply hilarious. One of the best comedies out there in the fandom.

The Ichor of Talos

Title: The Ichor of Talos
Author: Nikoshinigami
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock, Lestrade
Warning: PG-13, character death (Sherlock - but not like you think)
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

After being convicted of the murder of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson is sentenced to confinement, therapy, and to the constant companionship of a hologram of his victim to aid in his rehabilitation. While John remains uncertain of his guilt, Sherlock is only too happy to engage in the mystery of his own murder to try and discover why he died and how events set his path to cross with the war ravaged stranger he's now posthumously bound to.

AO3

Another work of Nikoshinigami's that I fell in love with. It's an anxious relationship, though. Unlike with stories like "Chrysalis", there's so much right about the setting, and yet you feel the darkness hovering over everything. I cannot but be wary of what is to come.
Still, I love it.
Definitely one of the best authors in the fandom right now.

This Thing All Things Devour

Title: This Thing All Things Devour
Author: cypress_tree
Fandom: Sherlock / In Time

Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, Molly, Sally, Lestrade
Warning: NC-17, slash, AU, crossover
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

In 2169, time is money—literally. Humans are genetically engineered to stop aging at 25, when the numbers on their arm start counting down from one year. When that time is up, they die. The only way to get more time is to earn it, borrow it, or steal it.
John Watson lives day-to-day in the crowded slums of Zone 13. He never imagined living any differently—until he meets the practically-immortal Sherlock, and helps him on a case to track a local time-thief...

AO3

Brilliant story. I didn't know "In Time" but I think the main elements of the universe are very conflicting and dark. Putting Sherlock and John in there... yes, it works. It does.
I loved the general mood. You can feel "the time is running." You expect it to run out.

Into the Living Sea of Waking Dreams

Title: Into the Living Sea of Waking Dreams
Author: Hekate1308
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Mycroft, Sherlock, Jim, John, Lestrade
Warning: PG-13, murder (Mycroft - Jim), Parallel Universe
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

Choices could alter the course of our lives; Mycroft Holmes was about to learn this in a way no one ever had before.

FF

Main focus on Mycroft and Sherlock, as well as their relationship over the years. I already liked Hekate's other Parallel Universe AU, and this one's just as nice.

Got My Eye on You

Title: Got My Eye on You
Author: sevenpercent
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Lestrade, Sherlock, Mycroft, John/Mary, OMC (Sam)
Warning: PG-13, suicidal (Sherlock), illness (Sherlock - autistic), injury (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

Lestrade may have only "known" Sherlock for five years when the serial suicide murders started (Study in Pink), but he met him for the first time years before, when Sherlock was only sixteen. This is the story of their journey, both before, during and after. No slash, just friendship

FF

Brilliant paternal!Lestrade fic. Mycroft's a bit on the obsessive-brother spectrum, but I can see where the author is coming from.
It's a very good portray of autism. There's Sam, and there's Sherlock. The disorder is part of the story but it doesn't take over.

An Age of Silver

Title: An Age of Silver
Author: ImpishTubist
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock/OMC (Stanley Hopkins), Sally, Lestrade/John
Warning: R, slash, injury (Hopkins), mention of character death (Victor), illness (cancer - Lestrade, chronic disease - Hopkins), marriage
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock Holmes is adapting to the pace of a more sedate life when a series of gruesome murders pulls him out of semi-retirement. Meanwhile, a burgeoning relationship with one of Scotland Yard’s own forces him to confront ghosts he thought he had buried long ago.

AO3

I've rec'ed another instalment of this series. This is outstanding enough to warrant another mention. Truly.
I am rather wary of OCs, as probably the count of the "oc" tag shows. I ship Sherlock with a lot of persons. Irene, Lestrade, John, heck, his own brother at times. Then there's the odd Molly/Sherlock story around... Sally, Anderson... Yes. You get the picture. And it is quite easy to notice that my current OTP is Victor/Sherlock which is ridiculous but... well. My excuse.. um. I ship it? Okay, not a strong argument.
Probably as weak as any I could bring up to justify Sherlock/OC. Hopkins is a beautiful OC (and partly canon, so...). Sherlock's grief is shown from a variety of perspectives. I like it. And yes, he deserves some happy end. The previous instalment was sad. I love the fact that Victor would have told him to move on. It's my head canon. That something happened but that Victor, in the end, loves Sherlock enough to let go. Their love is... I should write a meta about it. Why this idea is so beautiful.

Bodies and Minds

Title: Bodies and Minds
Author: NezumiPi
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, Lestrade, Moran
Warning: PG-13, disability (Sherlock)
Length: Medium
Status: Ongoing

Watson, Lestrade, and Mycroft go back into Sherlock's life to try to understand his death.

Molly Hooper visits a still-grieving John Watson with the news that Sherlock is alive, but he's disappeared. John, Lestrade, and Mycroft travel to America in search of him, but what they find is not what they expected. Includes no fewer than 6 characters named John.

AO3

Sherlock!whump. And an interesting ethical question is being raised.
I rec this for everybody. The pairing is barely graspable.
Everybody who wants to see Sherlock at an animal shelter surrounded by a rabbit, a gold fish and several dogs. All of them named John. No. It's not crack.

The Fall of Gods

Title: The Fall of Gods
Author: ImpishTubist
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Victor/Sherlock, John/Lestrade, Moran
Warning: NC-17, slash, injury (Sherlock), illness (Victor), character death (Victor)
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock remembers a time before Moriarty. It seemed to go on forever. It was over all too quickly.
Sherlock finds an ally in death and begins the slow process of dismantling Moriarty's network, not knowing if he'll ever be able to return home. Meanwhile, back in London, John and Lestrade mourn, remember, and move on.

AO3

And when it rains, think of me.
Think of me, and know that you were loved.

This fic is cruel. It is. One of the few stories that made me cry.
I knew he'd die from the moment he joined Sherlock. He was too perfect, too big a character for life...
Still it hurts. I ache for Victor, and I ache for Sherlock.
Marked classic because this is... the story.

Part of the Until the Night is Gone Series. To my shame, I haven't read all instalments yet. I felt like this piece of fiction is too valuable and emotional to "taint" the rec with the almost fluffy instalment before it, and the pondering mood of the following one...

ImpishTubist managed to make me cry once again.
God damn, I hope they'll give Victor an appearance in season 4. I feel ridiculous crying over a OMC. If this continues, this will be my favorite pairing... with one character that has never appeared in the actual series. I begin to see why so many Mystrade fans went crazy when Mycoft and Lestrade finally were seen in the same room.

Length: Novella

He return, the fallout, the pieces you pick up.

AO3

T'is a difficult patient.
There is no way to deny that the mood is very gloomy. The feelings are raw. The characterization very fragile, broken.
Still, I think the end is still too raw. I missed some feel good moment.
I liked it when John came around and asked just the questions that bothered me from the beginning of their, well, affair?
And I have a hard time to decide against labelling this a PTSD (Sherlock) story. I think it's there, but they don't talk about it. So it's no big part of the story.

Author: kres
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Lestrade
Warning: NC-17, slash, bdsm, injury (Sherlock, John)
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

John finds out from the telly.

AO3

The story is well-written...
and yes. Well. The BDSM is somewhat... dubious consent, I guess. The NC-17 parts feel a bit wrong until they sort themselves out. It's more like the process leading up to the final "understanding."
However, I totally buy into John's violent side. And when Lestrade notices Sherlock's wounds, I had a small bout of Sherstrade :)

The Holiday

Title: Th Holiday
Author: Scriblit
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock, John(/Mary + baby), Mrs. Hudson, Jim, OC (Gruner - criminal), Lestrade, Molly
Warning: R, non-con (Sherlock)
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

A month following an horrific, sadistic attack during a case, Sherlock is still physically incapacitated and emotionally damaged. A holiday is suggested, but even stuck out in the middle of nowhere, he and John happen upon a case that could make Sherlock begin to feel like his old self again - or could kill him.

AO3

The only thing I find distasteful in this fic is Mary plus baby.
Still, it's too good not to rec it. I actually would quite like a sequel. Without murderous wife and unnecessary baggage, to be honest. Just makes me scream "decide John, either solve murders, or be a father. Don't be an ass of a father who risks his life for fun without thinking of his child".
Okay, ranting contained...
This fic has got the entire set go on holiday without it being crammed. There's still enough screen time for every character, and no character is being neglected. Liked that.

Mise en Place

Title: Mise en Place
Author: azriona
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Molly, Lestrade, Jim, Harry
Warning: NC-17, slash, AU
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

John Watson had no intentions of taking over the family business, but when he returns from Afghanistan, battered and bruised, and discovers that his sister Harry has run their restaurant into the ground, he doesn't have much choice. There's only one thing that can save the Empire from closing for good – the celebrity star of the BBC series Restaurant Reconstructed, Chef Sherlock Holmes.

AO3

Mind-blowing, and how come I have almost no warnings to tag? I don't believe it. Shame on me.
I love Mise en Place. I had no real expectations, even though I know azriona and I liked some of her previous works. Mise en Place has got many elements that "could" work, but also some that made me frown. I mean, seriously, Sherlock as a TV chef? I can see him tearing into people, yes. But I can't see him motivating the staff.
Azriona combines the series and the story by putting in quotes - which make you smile every time, just because you recognize them! I never felt like the AU world was overbearing or too vast to explore. A good AU, definitely.

Pull the Stars from the Sky

Title: Pull the Stars from the Sky
Author: roane
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Jim, Lestrade, Harry, Irene
Warning: NC-17, slash, injury (Irene, Sherlock)
Length: Novella
Status: Ongoing

It’s the fall of 2000, and to help him out after his military career has ended due to injury, John Watson’s sister Harriet gets him a job as US tour manager for rising star of the industrial scene and enfant terrible, Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock’s not long out of rehab and there are plenty of doubts as to whether he’s serious about recovery. Plus, the music industry is shaking in its boots over the Napster mess. All John has to do is keep the money coming in and make sure his star doesn't screw things up. After the army, that should be easy, right?

AO3

A music AU; there aren't that many well-done AUs, so a rec for this work. Its pacing is good. Otherwise, well, enjoyable. Not deep, or very artistic. Not the author's intention. I think it's more of a "light reading". Good for relaxing.

A Finger Slip

Title: A Finger Slip
Author: Pawtal
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, Lestrade
Warning: PG
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

In which John sends a text to the wrong number by mistake. Little does he know the person he just texted will impact his life more than he could have imagined.

AO3

The SMS exchanges are very funny at times. I like Lestrade in here, and Sherlock's all flustered and not sure how to approach John later on. I liked that.
The end was sad - John leaving, well...
There's still an epilogue missing, until then... ongoing.
A different author wrote a "fanfiction" on this, with Pawtal's approval. Katzedecimal's A Slip of The Finger
Personally, I like the original one more but for the sake of completeness... and it isn't a bad fanfiction, no! I just like the original better.

Don't Be Dead

Title: Don't Be Dead
Author: JayEz
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Lestrade
Warning: PG-13, injury(Lestrade)
Length: Medium
Status: Ongoing

After the Fall, John tries to deal. It takes him a while to figure out that Sherlock is still alive. Though once he is certain, he sets out to clear his best friend’s name and bring him back.

John and Sherlock are not talking about the Moment. So, when Lestrade asks Sherlock to help them find the Gravedigger, a kidnapper who buries his victims alive and leaves them to die if the ransom isn’t paid, the consulting detective is glad to have a distraction.
But then, Sherlock wakes up in a car several feet underground with an unconscious Lestrade in the backseat and approximately 12 hours of air left.

AO3

This is utterly brilliant - Sherlock's utterly brilliant. I liked the second part and have to admit that Johnlock was more of a side bonus.

To Everything, There Is a Season

Title: To Everything, There Is a Season
Author: shadowed_sunsets
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, Mommy Holmes, Lestrade
Warning: R, drug abuse
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

Act I: This is the story of Sherlock and Mycroft's childhood together, back when Sherlock still looked up to and his world revolved around his brother. When Sherlock lived like he wanted to and only his brother understood.
Of course, it couldn't last forever; no matter how much he wanted.
A take on Mycroft and Sherlock's childhood, written pre- series 2, in vignette's from Mycroft's POV.
Act II: Having decided he doesn't need anyone and can survive perfectly well on his own, Sherlock strikes out into the world. He hits a few bumps and lows before finally finding the one person he's really been looking for all along.
Sherlock's journey through uni, meeting Greg Lestrade, and then stumbling upon John Watson.

AO3

This is Sherlock's journey from childhood to, well, John. It's not detailed, but the author shows us the scenes that changed his life for the worse. And better, at times. It's a roller coaster ride and I love it. I just do.
