Give Your Heart to a Wild Thing

Title: Give Your Heart to a Wild Thing
Author: kenopsia
Fandom: Sherlock / His Dark Materials

Characters: Sherlock/Victor, Mycroft, Mommy Holmes
Warning: PG-13, slash, character death (Father Holmes), AU, crossover
Length: Medium
Status: Ongoing

Mycroft is just hoping he doesn't have to kill Sherlock's daemon in her sleep to help Sherlock live to see adulthood. It might as well be his prime directive, because nobody else seems capable of doing it.

AO3

Bloody brilliant story. This has just hit my all time favorites! Last time I was as impressed with a story as right now was when I read Chrysalis by starcrossed_lover or Mad Lori's Performance in a Leading Role.

In which Sherlock reluctantly agrees to be this year's Father Christmas, John accidentally agrees to help, and both of them discover that there's a lot more involved in this Christmas thing than they ever imagined.

AO3

Sherlock is Father Christmas. No. No, I haven't got this wrong. He's not dressing up as Father Christmas. He IS Father Christmas. This story is lovely. Truly.

Title: Spare Change
Author: Ermerness
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock (switch), Mycroft, Jim, Mummy Holmes
Warning: NC-17, slash,AU, slash, marriage

The Holmes family is one of the richest and most powerful in England. His mother decides it's time he settles down with someone powerful, wealthy and well connected. John Watson happens to be none of those things.

AO3

A nice AU with rich!Sherlock who is supposed to marry a dull person. Then John Watson happens. And Sherlock is no longer bored.

This Is Where I Began

Title: This Is Where I Began
Author: dioscureantwins
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Mycroft, Sherlock, Daddy Holmes (Sherlock), OMC (John, Mr Talbot, Mr Mancini), John, Mommy Holmes
Warning: R, character death (Daddy Holmes, Mr Mancini), illness (Mummy Holmes), non-con (Sherlock), drug abuse (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

The only evidence remaining is the expression on his face. Now he remembers it was different from his usual scowl of disgust at the utter dullness of the whole human race – with the exception of John of course. In fact it’s the expression that immediately crops up in his mind at the thought of Daddy’s face. A look of quiet benevolent fondness, not cast around without discrimination but almost always there while looking at his mother, Mycroft, himself.

AO3

There are too many great lines not to quote them. And I think they actually tell more about the quality of this work than any of my praise would do. It just... explains so much, and in so much depth about Mycroft and Sherlock.

“I do hope you will find a John of your own one day Sherlock, because we all need a John."

"He could have been so much more but he chose not to.”

“I … I know I should love him, I want to love him but he’s making it really hard for me. Why does he have to resemble you so much? He’s like a clone and sometimes I feel each day he lives he saps your strength. He’s going to make you die on me.” (Mummy Holmes to Daddy Sherlock about Sherlock)

“You’re not him,” she says. “You’re nothing but an impostor."

"I love you. I want to love you. But you’re making it so hard for me. You’ve always rejected me, right from the start. You didn’t want my milk … You squirmed away from my breast with a look of disgust on your tiny face. Your lovely tiny face. And whenever I bent over your cot to pick you up … you were just lying there … looking at me with his eyes … but no kindness … “ (Mummy Holmes to Sherlock)

The loss of Mycroft. That’s what the school uniform signifies.
That night he had crept into Mycroft’s bed to be close to a body he could trust to do him no harm.

Sherlock wants to reach out to him, to lay his small hand on Daddy’s big long-fingered one to tell him it’s all right, he won’t tell Mummy what he’s seen.

But it would help if you’d change your attitude, if only a bit. For Christ’s sake, Sherlock, I’m not yet sixteen. I’m nothing but a schoolboy myself and all these worries get heaped on my plate. Mummy is no help at all. She just tells me to arrange everything as I see fit.

"That’s just stupid and you know it, Sherlock. Or you should ask Mycroft if you don’t. He could explain it well enough. In the real world one doesn’t choose the gardener over the estate. Those fairy stories only happen in novels.”

It is  very sad, a very detailed fictional universe. One of the best works I've ever read.

Long Ago and Far Away

Title: Long Ago and Far Away
Author: lotherington
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mrs Hudson, Mommy Holmes, Mycroft
Warning: NC-17, slash, injury (John), war, AU
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

‘Are you in the habit of inviting queer men back to your flat, John?’ he murmured, his eyes half-lidded as he stared at John again.
John huffed a breath through his nose. ‘None quite so peculiar as you,’ he said after a long pause, lifting his eyes to Sherlock’s.
October, 1937. A chance encounter late one night leads to Sherlock following John home. I can’t really put it much better than Vera Lynn herself: That certain night, the night we met / there was magic abroad in the air.

Frantic relationship in a very gloomy setting. The narrative is beautifully done, it makes you feel the pressure of the war.
Spans from 1937 to the beginning of 1945 (exception: one story set in 1951).

The Sustain Stories

Title: The Sustain Stories
Author: maybe_amanda
Fandom: Sherlock

Characters: Sherlock/Molly, John, Mycroft, OMC (Edmund - baby), Daddy Holmes, Mommy Holmes, Jim
Warning: NC-17, het, pregnancy, cheating ( Daddy Holmes)
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

"So now you're behaving like a six year old 'cause he didn't take you along on his honeymoon?" Lestrade said. "Grow the hell up."

AO3

Second instalment has got a rather gruesome crime.
Actually this is less about Sherlock and Molly than about Sherlock growing into the role of a father. The couple relationship actually develops slowly, it comes to the front of the story at the third instalment.

When John looked at him, Sherlock felt whole, felt like he was who he was meant to be. Not a freak, an oddity, or a monster in-between.

This story is a delicate approach to transgender issues.

Castle and Sand

Title: Castle and Sand
Author: grey853
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, mention of Sherlock/others, Mycroft/Lestrade, Mommy Holmes
Warning: NC-17, slash, illness (PTSD, cancer - Mommy Holmes), child abuse (Sherlock), non-con (Sherlock),
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock and John both have difficult pasts that affect their evolving relationship. When John prevents a mugging, it sets off a dangerous chain of events that not only impacts him, but his whole family. In the end there's a wedding and a honeymoon, but will there really be a happy ending?

Another goodie for my novel collection.
I particularly like how both, Sherlock and John, are broken in their own regards and need each other to find some sort of closure. They do not wall in their misery, but it is definitely an issue. Haunting them. Well-done, grey853.

A Matter of Fact

Title: A Matter of Fact
Author: OpalJade
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mommy Holmes
Warning: R, slash
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

John Watson did not believe in fortune tellers. The psychic he’d been dragged to in his younger days might’ve been right about ‘a serious injury occurring in a foreign land’ and in advising him to take a ‘greater interest in computers and IT’. But not once had she mentioned that in his forties he would fall head over heels in love with his male flatmate. A little warning would’ve been nice.
Sherlock Holmes only believed in empirical data and facts. He’d assumed those would be enough to persuade John Watson that his fake suicide had been necessary. But not once had it crossed his brilliant mind that the one thing that would ultimately convince John would have nothing to do with facts. A little warning would’ve changed absolutely nothing.

Either the author is bloody brilliant or really has some issues. I prefer the former deduction.
Her thesis on Reichenbach Fall is intriguing. Far-fetched, intriguing, and.. well, brilliant. Nuts, but I like it. My new head-canon.
Otherwise, this story follows the usual recipe for Johnlock works; John and Sherlock notice how entangled their lives have become. and consider "more". Here this story becomes once more brilliant... and nuts at the same time. Sherlock visits Ella. One of my favorite tropes now. I need to find more stories like that XD

John Watson's Twelve Days of Christmas

Title: John Watson's Twelve Days of Christmas
Author: earlgreytea69
Fandom: Sherlock
Chararacters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, Mommy Holmes
Warning: R, slash
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

It's the holiday season. John Watson needs money. Sherlock Holmes needs something else.

AO3

God, the fandom needed a story like this - John and Sherlock as Christmas elves.
Well, besides that, it's an intriguing ontake on Mommy Holmes and the entire Holmes family dynamics. I thoroughly enjoyed the courting and dancing. It's pure fluff, so probably not everybody's cup of tea. It just fit, especially around this time at the year.

Title: To Everything, There Is a Season
Author: shadowed_sunsets
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock, Mycroft, Mommy Holmes, Lestrade
Warning: R, drug abuse
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

Act I: This is the story of Sherlock and Mycroft's childhood together, back when Sherlock still looked up to and his world revolved around his brother. When Sherlock lived like he wanted to and only his brother understood.
Of course, it couldn't last forever; no matter how much he wanted.
A take on Mycroft and Sherlock's childhood, written pre- series 2, in vignette's from Mycroft's POV.
Act II: Having decided he doesn't need anyone and can survive perfectly well on his own, Sherlock strikes out into the world. He hits a few bumps and lows before finally finding the one person he's really been looking for all along.
Sherlock's journey through uni, meeting Greg Lestrade, and then stumbling upon John Watson.

AO3

This is Sherlock's journey from childhood to, well, John. It's not detailed, but the author shows us the scenes that changed his life for the worse. And better, at times. It's a roller coaster ride and I love it. I just do.

Lost For Words

Title: Lost For Words
Author: awanderingbard
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock, mommy Holmes, Mycroft
Warning: PG-13, injury, disability, amnesia
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

Sherlock is assaulted by an unknown assailant while John is away at a medical conference, leaving him with a severe brain injury. While his intellect and personality are intact, he's lost the use of his right-side limbs and his ability to speak freely. John suddenly finds himself as the main source of support, and possibly a caregiver, to a flatmate who is struggling to do the things he loves most. And Sherlock Holmes has never been the best of patients.

A nice mommy Holmes. A nice one! One which seems almost normal. And with a rather normal Sherlock - mommy Holmes interaction! Really.
And the end makes you grin.
Because... everyone's fine^^

Everything Mycroft has ever done has always been for Sherlock.

At AO3

Dark. And I love Mycroft in here, he's so lost, so fixated on his younger brother.
And their family is so screwed up, it hurts to read it. Mycroft's struggling through it and is confused, has nothing but Sherlock in his life that anchores him.

Title: The Pull of One Magnet to Another

Mummy has arranged Mycroft’s marriage with an ex-army doctor. However, John meets Sherlock first, and sparks fly.

At AO3

Gosh, so much to say... yes. No, not really.
A nice story with a little twist. The characters were not really canon-like but... what the hell, why give a damn? It was an interesting, funny read. Something NEW, to quote Sherlock.

Rather angsty Holmes-family story. I've seen a lot of vicious!Siger Holmes stories with either a mentally incapitated or indifferent Mommy Holmes. This, though, is a nasty mommy. Liked Mycroft in here. Somehow, I ended up a Mycroft fan down the Sherlock road.

Title: The Case of the Moebius Trap
Author: bitenomnom
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John, Sherlock, John/Mary, Mycroft, Mommy Holmes
Warning: PG-13, drug abuse
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

When John finally gives in and accepts a case for the first time since Sherlock fell eight months ago, he finds himself in a unique position: in possession of what his client calls a time machine, and desperate enough to give it a go. If it works, he could travel back in time.
If it works, he could save Sherlock.

At AO3

Gen Story ( with squinting platonic love ). I quite liked John's travels, especially young Sherlock was really cute. I wish there was a GOOD fanfiction depicting him like that. Most of the kidfics I stumbled across were horrible.
Rather promising story here.

Title: The Iceman Cometh
Author: polyphony
Fandom: Sherlock

Warning: R, slash, injury
Length: Novella

An intriguing puzzle tempts Sherlock to accept Victor Trevor's invitation to the French Riviera, but all is not what it seems. Frustrated by the case and increasingly concerned about an absent John, Sherlock uncovers far more than he was meant to and is forced to become a fugitive, pursued by those on both sides of the law, as he fights for his freedom and the lives of all those around him.

At AO3

Do you know that phenomenon when you read something and it's really good but confusing?
That's this kind of story. It's at times rather fast-paced, the reader is more of an observer than actually "involved". Still, it is intriguing.
And the first time I read about sociopathic Sherlock having a hard childhood because of psychopathic Mycroft.

Length: Short

When Sherlock was eight years old his family bought him an Alpha...

Is it smutty? Yeah, maybe. A bit. But it's more or less about John and Sherlock growing "together".
I have some problems with the light way the slavery-like human trade was handled, so a warning here too.
