The Overlooked

Title: The Overlooked
Author: ChristineX
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/OFC (Celeste), Voldemort, Dumbledore
Warning: PG-13, character death (Snape), child, war
Length. Novel
Status: Completed

Snape discovers the existence of a magically gifted young woman who never received an invitation to Hogwarts. But as the final confrontation with Voldemort approaches, can Snape protect her from those around her...including himself?

FF

Another OFC story. Can't believe it. Well, the story deserves the rec. It highlights how Snape is torn between making a life for himself and the war effort. I thought the end was a bit depressing. He never got to know his son. I'd have loved it if the end diverged from canon.

Snape's Worst Memory

Title: Snape's Worst Memory
Author: Darkglare
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters:Snape/Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, Dumbledore, Regulus
Warning: R, School, war, illness (Snape, Lily), alcohol abuse (Eileen), character death (OC Helen, Peter, Mr Evans, Eileen, Tobias), eating disorder (Snape), het, werewolf injury (Lily),pregnancy
Length: Novel

FF

The Marauders have more enemies than just Severus Snape, who's rotten luck is about to change. His friendship with Lily will continue past fifth year.

This is a story not for the faint of heart. The word count will blow you away before you even get to the good part, the writing.
Lily is very immature, and almost disturbing in her careless ways. On the other hand, Snape's infatuation with her -  strong, then waning with his own fortunes shifting - is fiery and very in character. He is deeply flawed in his scheming ways, and certainly dark(ish).
And if you like the Marauders, stay away.

Severus makes his way into the world.

The only criticism I can bring up is the end. It just lacks a sort of... closure.

Hermione Granger and the Intended Vessels

Title: Hermione Granger and the Intended Vessels
Author: Severely_Lupine
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Hermione, Dumbledore, Remus/Tonks
Warning: NC-17, dub-con, pregnancy, illness (tumor), war, school
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sometimes all it takes to change the world is one small, simple choice. On the night the Death Eaters attack Hogwarts, Hermione Granger makes such a choice. Her life—and her world—will never be the same.
The guilt from killing Draco is bad enough, and knowing she saved Dumbledore doesn’t help it, but when a Ministry decree forces her to marry Professor Snape—a cruel, cold man who’s apparently hated her since she was a child—in order to be used as a breeder of superior wizards, Hermione doesn’t think her life can get any worse. But, of course, she’s wrong.
Soon, Voldemort’s after her and her friends (again), her life is in grave peril, and all her hopes for a future at all, much less a happy one, rest on her own shoulders—and on Snape, her unwanted husband, whose heart still belongs to a woman long dead.

AO3

It takes some time to like the plot. I never was very impressed with the pairing, but the story makes it a bit more believable how Snape could fall in love with her. Or in which ways he could not.

The Warehouse

Title: The Warehouse
Author: Loonymoon
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/James, Remus, Lily(/James, /Snape), Sirius
Warning: NC-17, het, slash, drug abuse, war
Status: Ongoing
Length: Novel

This jumble of emotions could be called love. I never expected it to be this cruel or complicated or humiliating. Love that’s not… convenient.

Snape and James re-meet in very different circumstances. And this leads to a severe crisis for both of them.
Love triangle, well, but not the way you'd think.

Obsession

Title: Obsession
Author: Kerrymdb
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Tonks, Remus/Tonks
Warning: R, het, pregnancy, war
Status: Completed
Length: Novel

In her heart, Nymphadora Tonks knows that Remus Lupin is the only man for her. Then why can’t she get Severus Snape out of her head?

A rare pairing, indeed. Not only this is one of the fine points why one should read it, but also because Snape is shown from his best, worst, kindest, meanest side.

In Shining Armour

Title: In Shining Armour
Author. coffeeonthepatio
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/OC, OC (Emma or Burgundy), McGonagall
Warning: PG-13, het, post-hogwarts
Length. Novel
Status: Completed

Snape's only saving the unborn child of a strange woman. He never signed up for having his house invaded and a stranger and her child caring for him after the snake bite.

FF

Snape with a child - even if it's not his own, could we ask for more?
It takes some time until you get to like the OC female, but you will. Her pride is similar to Snape's, and that is why their relationship is interesting. They tend to fight a lot. Very snarky.

If You Want Something Done Right

Title: If You Want Something Done Right
Author: Rukiie
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Lily
Warning: M, het, mention of non-con, Horkrux, magical creature (Basilisk)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

...you have to do it yourself. In their 6th year a mysterious disappearance forces Lily and Severus to work together despite their falling out and puts them on the path meant for a certain bespectacled boy but if you want something done right...

This is huge. And brilliant. Lily is sometimes a bit nuts, but the author claims it will make more sense in the end. Also, everything is told from Snape's perspective. In a way, it's normal that Lily would appear nuts to him at times. You can really overlook that part, because the story is full of riddles, sentimental parts, puberty issues, angst, hope, redemption, trust issues, friendship, and more. This is THE story to go for if you a) like the pairing b) are not sure about the pairing but want Snape to be happy c) don't care about the pairing but like clevver stories d) like confusing stories. It will confuse the hell out of you. But it's worth it. Every chapter is worth the read.

A Dream Carved in Stone

Title: A Dream Carved in Stone
Author: diadelphous
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Lily, Dumbledore
Warning: M, het, pregnancy, war
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

When an unmarried Lily Evans joins the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore gives her a simple mission: meet with the Death Eater Severus Snape and tell him what she's done.

FF

Beautiful story in which Snape "got" the girl. A few years later, but he did. Lily is independent and head-strong. They fit together very nicely. I quite enjoyed their dynamic.

This Is Where I Began

Title: This Is Where I Began
Author: dioscureantwins
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Mycroft, Sherlock, Daddy Holmes (Sherlock), OMC (John, Mr Talbot, Mr Mancini), John, Mommy Holmes
Warning: R, character death (Daddy Holmes, Mr Mancini), illness (Mummy Holmes), non-con (Sherlock), drug abuse (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

The only evidence remaining is the expression on his face. Now he remembers it was different from his usual scowl of disgust at the utter dullness of the whole human race – with the exception of John of course. In fact it’s the expression that immediately crops up in his mind at the thought of Daddy’s face. A look of quiet benevolent fondness, not cast around without discrimination but almost always there while looking at his mother, Mycroft, himself.

AO3

There are too many great lines not to quote them. And I think they actually tell more about the quality of this work than any of my praise would do. It just... explains so much, and in so much depth about Mycroft and Sherlock.

“I do hope you will find a John of your own one day Sherlock, because we all need a John."

"He could have been so much more but he chose not to.”

“I … I know I should love him, I want to love him but he’s making it really hard for me. Why does he have to resemble you so much? He’s like a clone and sometimes I feel each day he lives he saps your strength. He’s going to make you die on me.” (Mummy Holmes to Daddy Sherlock about Sherlock)

“You’re not him,” she says. “You’re nothing but an impostor."

"I love you. I want to love you. But you’re making it so hard for me. You’ve always rejected me, right from the start. You didn’t want my milk … You squirmed away from my breast with a look of disgust on your tiny face. Your lovely tiny face. And whenever I bent over your cot to pick you up … you were just lying there … looking at me with his eyes … but no kindness … “ (Mummy Holmes to Sherlock)

The loss of Mycroft. That’s what the school uniform signifies.
That night he had crept into Mycroft’s bed to be close to a body he could trust to do him no harm.

Sherlock wants to reach out to him, to lay his small hand on Daddy’s big long-fingered one to tell him it’s all right, he won’t tell Mummy what he’s seen.

But it would help if you’d change your attitude, if only a bit. For Christ’s sake, Sherlock, I’m not yet sixteen. I’m nothing but a schoolboy myself and all these worries get heaped on my plate. Mummy is no help at all. She just tells me to arrange everything as I see fit.

"That’s just stupid and you know it, Sherlock. Or you should ask Mycroft if you don’t. He could explain it well enough. In the real world one doesn’t choose the gardener over the estate. Those fairy stories only happen in novels.”

It is  very sad, a very detailed fictional universe. One of the best works I've ever read.

Crazy for Love

Title: Crazy for Love
Author: prettyvk
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Sherlock/John, OMC (James Moriarty), John/Mary, Molly
Warning: PG-13, character death (Mary, Moran), childfic
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

It starts with five words.
“Is my father really dead?”
Or maybe, that’s how it ends.

AO3

Might turn into a series! Update: It did. Sequel's up.

This is by no means as bad as it sounds. I really had discarded it the first two times I found it, and the third time I was bored enough... to shoot the walls. So I gave it a go.
James is a difficult child to hate, and a difficult child to love. At first, he seems too... perfect and developed for his age. Then we get into his issues, and his limits (like when playing the violin). It's a clever approach.
I still disliked Mary - what's interesting about inserting a boring person into John's life to make him boring and occupied? ... I was really glad Sherlock found a purpose in James. I wish there was somebody like that for Sherlock in canon, too... That's another story, though.
For now, I have to say: An excellent read.

Saving Sherlock Holmes

Author: earlgreytea68

Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft/Lestrade, Mrs. Hudson
Warning: PG-13
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock Holmes, schoolboy. Yeah, that basically sums it up.

AO3
also on LJ.

Reasons to read this:

  • Delightfully protective Mycroft
  • Utterly loved and spoiled Sherlock

This is more than epic, and a fine exploration of Mycroft and Sherlock's relationship.
I consider this classic.

The British Government accidentally clones Sherlock Holmes. Which brings a baby to 221B Baker Street.

AO3

Lovely. I love earlgreytea68's works. They always are very expressive, fluffy but with a very honest attitude. Heart-warming.
Baby Oliver is really cute. I am a bit wary of childfics with babies. Often they are depicted all wrong, all unrealistic. This is not too far-fetched.

There's a spin-off about how Oliver wants to go to Eton, and how John shows Sherlock a bee museum, pardon, apiculture museum.

Author: SilentAuror
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, Mycroft, OMC (Duncan)
Warning: NC-17, slash, cheating (John), injury (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock has been away from London for nine hundred and twelve days and counting, and has no idea what sort of reception to expect when he finally returns.

A bit more action-based than the original series. The relationship is important but I like this story as an action story better.

Six months probably isn't long enough for John to begin picking up the pieces. Fortunately, Sherlock is trying to ensure that he doesn't have to. But in the meantime, a good old-fashioned friend is already setting up the board for the next round - and this time there's an ominous twist in the story that's more focused on John than Sherlock cares to admit.

FF

Your typical post-TRF story. Mostly case-fic, and it's nicely written. Plot is a bit thin, though, for novel-length.

Got My Eye on You

Title: Got My Eye on You
Author: sevenpercent
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: Lestrade, Sherlock, Mycroft, John/Mary, OMC (Sam)
Warning: PG-13, suicidal (Sherlock), illness (Sherlock - autistic), injury (Sherlock)
Length: Novel
Status: Ongoing

Lestrade may have only "known" Sherlock for five years when the serial suicide murders started (Study in Pink), but he met him for the first time years before, when Sherlock was only sixteen. This is the story of their journey, both before, during and after. No slash, just friendship

FF

Brilliant paternal!Lestrade fic. Mycroft's a bit on the obsessive-brother spectrum, but I can see where the author is coming from.
It's a very good portray of autism. There's Sam, and there's Sherlock. The disorder is part of the story but it doesn't take over.

Safe Distance

Title: Safe Distance
Author: merripestin
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock
Warning: NC-17, slash, injury (John)
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

The mother was apparently poisoned, the son seems to have killed himself playing Russian roulette. It's a murder and a suicide. Or is it a suicide and a murder?
At least the case is distracting John from the fact that sex with Sherlock was probably a mistake right from the start.
John will learn to cope, one way or another.

AO3

Heterosexual John in a homoromantic relationship with homosexual acts on the menu.
Basically, it's about him coming to terms with loving Sherlock, and accepting his masculinity when he does not particularly feel attracted to the male body. It's a very honest approach, and I love this story. I do. I've read well-done asexual!Sherlock in sexual relationships stories, and this is basically part of the trope family.

The Circle of Fifths

Title: The Circle of Fifths
Author: Nikoshinigami
Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock, John/Mary, OFC (Billie), Mycroft, OMC (Church), Jim, Moran
Warning: NC-17, slash, injury (John, Sherlock), character death (Mary)
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

John writes a blog entry.

E-mails between John and Mr. Sigerson.

John's life is not only in danger but caught in a delicate balance between love, friendship, and his own desires. A supporting character in his own life's story, it may already be too late to affect his life's course.

Nothing is ever simple for John Watson when it involves Sherlock Holmes. With the world doing its best to outdo even its only consulting detective, can the things left unsaid ever finally be spoken?

John has enough to deal with in his normal life as it is, but when a stranger arrives with a new case that cannot be turned down, can he juggle his choices with their repercussions well enough for them all to survive?

AO3

Oh God. Oh God.
I just have to quote.

I don't come first anymore, John," he admitted, not as blind to the fact as some of his actions seemed to indicate. "Things come up, girlfriends or wives make requests. Schedules aren't as flexible. I'm asking you to save a date for me. I want, when this is over, one more day where I am the most important thing you have planned for that evening."

Then there's the brilliant ""hurt my brother.." talk with awkward Mycroft, more awkward John, and uncomfortable Sherlock.

John would wait. John would always wait. Because Sherlock couldn’t come to him if he didn’t.
Just have to love that line. Especially when you remember it from the second instalment, the one when Sherlock tells John that he will be waiting because if he won't, John can't come to him.

You have to love this story. Everybody does.

Harry Potter and the Curse of Durand

Warning: PG-13
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

When Harry returns to Hogwarts for his sixth year, he finds the entire school under an ancient and deadly dangerous enchantment.

AO3

A nice mystery story set in Hogwarts.
Well-written by an author, I have to admit, I did not know before this story. I dabble a lot in ships, but once in a while, you find these gen gems, and they make you wonder why you spend so much time reading cheesy, horrible ship fics...

An Age of Silver

Characters: Sherlock/OMC (Stanley Hopkins), Sally, Lestrade/John
Warning: R, slash, injury (Hopkins), mention of character death (Victor), illness (cancer - Lestrade, chronic disease - Hopkins), marriage
Length: Novel
Status: Completed

Sherlock Holmes is adapting to the pace of a more sedate life when a series of gruesome murders pulls him out of semi-retirement. Meanwhile, a burgeoning relationship with one of Scotland Yard’s own forces him to confront ghosts he thought he had buried long ago.

AO3

I've rec'ed another instalment of this series. This is outstanding enough to warrant another mention. Truly.
I am rather wary of OCs, as probably the count of the "oc" tag shows. I ship Sherlock with a lot of persons. Irene, Lestrade, John, heck, his own brother at times. Then there's the odd Molly/Sherlock story around... Sally, Anderson... Yes. You get the picture. And it is quite easy to notice that my current OTP is Victor/Sherlock which is ridiculous but... well. My excuse.. um. I ship it? Okay, not a strong argument.
Probably as weak as any I could bring up to justify Sherlock/OC. Hopkins is a beautiful OC (and partly canon, so...). Sherlock's grief is shown from a variety of perspectives. I like it. And yes, he deserves some happy end. The previous instalment was sad. I love the fact that Victor would have told him to move on. It's my head canon. That something happened but that Victor, in the end, loves Sherlock enough to let go. Their love is... I should write a meta about it. Why this idea is so beautiful.
