Frankly, I was amazed - and frightened - by the amount of criticism I have found while searching for news concerning Windows Blue, the upcoming update for Windows 8. Personally, I have a deep-rooted "relationship" with my computer systems. Since Windows 98, I've gone and experienced all versions. While Windows 8 holds the most drastic changes on the surface, I don't understand the distrust it is met with, nor the harsh criticism on its new look. Because of the surface navigation? Seriously, I've had cell phones that were harder to navigate.
Of course there are downsides to the new style; the two "surfaces" don't work parallel - they overlap. You cannot listen to music on the first layer while working on the second layer. Working simultaneously on different programs needs to happen on the same layer, otherwise it takes a few seconds to change the layer, then the window. Since I work with photoshop, pdf documents and the likes from time to time - I noticed those disadvantages rather early on. It's no big deal - getting viewers on the second layer, the "desktop", to work simultaneously is not the most exhausting task in the world.
The advantages outweigh those problems, though. I like the new feeling, the dynamic that is introduced by the surfaces.
I think it's ridiculous to stick to old technology. You cannot stop time, you cannot mourn past times forever or you'll be left behind. Time moves on, technology changes, the world changes. Why not embrace it? Don't get me wrong: I loved XP. I loved Vista. Hell, I am even writing this text from my good old Vista Computer. Admitting that changes are nice doesn't mean that you have to condemn everything and anything else. Every system has its dis- and advantages. They complement each other; I like working on Vista, 7 and 8 just the same. It's similiar to cars. One is roomier, one is faster, one is more stylish. There is no better, no worse; it always depends on the criteria.
I hope the distrust people are filled with will diminish over time; because it truly isn't deserved.
I am anticipating Windows Blue, especially since there will be no news until 2014 (Windows 9).
