‘Are you in the habit of inviting queer men back to your flat, John?’ he murmured, his eyes half-lidded as he stared at John again.
John huffed a breath through his nose. ‘None quite so peculiar as you,’ he said after a long pause, lifting his eyes to Sherlock’s.
October, 1937. A chance encounter late one night leads to Sherlock following John home. I can’t really put it much better than Vera Lynn herself: That certain night, the night we met / there was magic abroad in the air.

Frantic relationship in a very gloomy setting. The narrative is beautifully done, it makes you feel the pressure of the war.
Spans from 1937 to the beginning of 1945 (exception: one story set in 1951).

"So now you're behaving like a six year old 'cause he didn't take you along on his honeymoon?" Lestrade said. "Grow the hell up."

Second instalment has got a rather gruesome crime.
Actually this is less about Sherlock and Molly than about Sherlock growing into the role of a father. The couple relationship actually develops slowly, it comes to the front of the story at the third instalment.

Broken and battered by an old girlfriend, months after he's home from Afghanistan, John is forced to seek refuge at Asylum - a home for men with nowhere else to go. When he meets and begins to bond with his eccentric roommate (who is even more broken than he is), John realizes that maybe - just maybe - he can heal again.

There is a sequel but I decided to only rec this story. It is much stronger on the impact than the sequel. The sequel's a bit fluffier.

In the first couple of weeks at 221B Baker Street, John decides how to go about being Sherlock Holmes's friend.
John is still working through what it means that he's become friends with the world's only consulting detective. And now he knows that joking about it is not always such a good idea.
In which John is left on his own to investigate a murder, Sherlock is mistakenly locked in a lab at Bart’s, and “friendship” and “love story” are shown not to be mutually exclusive categories.
After an unlucky encounter with a couple of homophobes in an alley, John spends some time reconsidering things. Sherlock remains, as per usual, hyperaware of important things (like the amount of mud on a shoe or the quality of any given toiletry product), and half-insensible to irrelevant things (like feelings).
Sherlock attempts to get over his infatuation with his new flatmate using the time-honored solutions of brooding, misdirection, and avoidance. And of course sex.

AO3

Ehm. There's lots of hugging.
I think this describes the story quite well...
I am serious ^^
Bonus: John in a gay club. John all proud that he did it with a guy. Yes. Incredibly adorable. Don't let Martin Freeman read that...

Part of a Series.
I read the other story. Nice but this one's better by far.
The usual Post-Reichenbach fanon. John grieves, finds Mary, loves Mary, Sherlock returns, Mary is discarded.
I liked that Mary told John "No". It shows some sort of backbone. I wish she'd have done it in canon, too. But meh, she's rather selfish, so no chance there.

Yay! Somebody sends John on a tresure hunt with Sherlock at stake. Great :) Usually it's the other way around. The pacing is at times a bit slow because we don't get to see much interaction. It's more about John's inner perspective. I still liked it but some might find it a bit boring at times.

Sherlock with a child is something that has been done before, but not often. Here, John knowingly enters the strange relationship they develop. From the beginning, he suspects that he will end up  as a father without actually "having gotten" some. Yet, he moves in.

“Be still. Just--” John’s mouth waters a little at the sight of the whitish fluid and he clears his throat, “Hold on.”
Sherlock looks over his shoulder and meets John’s eyes in momentary bafflement before something like recognition rolls across his features. The familiar blend of smugness and deduction, and he snuffles down against a pillow.

This is filthy. Really. I've read lots of fanfictions, gen, het, slash, multiple. Yet this one is one of the most filthiest. I love it. John's fascination is graspable for the audience, and it makes you feel... well, guess.

Title: There Comes a Time

Warning: PG-13, drug abuse (Sherlock), character death (Sherlock, John)
Length: Medium

“There comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before...” - Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlett
John had thought his affliction an irritation, but nothing more, but finally when John’s ‘shifts’ through time start leading him deeper and deeper into the life of one Sherlock Holmes he realises that this could be the most beautiful, and the most painful, thing to have ever happened to him. As he grows old his travels force him to watch Sherlock becoming younger and younger, less and less complete. Everything leads towards the inevitable, heart-breaking conclusion that John must prepare himself for, whilst preparing Sherlock for the road that John has already travelled.
The one rule: They shan’t spoil the game.

AO3

This is sad. So sad. I truly couldn't bring myself to re-read this for the rec. I am doing this out of memory. John's jumps are beautifully described. The plot is a mix of fast-forwards and stops. I like that, it's very modern, very interesting. We get to see John age, and we get to see Sherlock age through his eyes. I don't know what's more tragic. The knowledge Sherlock keeps to himself, or the burden John has to bear. Letting go of Sherlock when he still has got time.

His Last Vow

Read this essay?
http://shadowfireflame.livejournal.com/64605.html
Do it.

I agree with shadowfireflame; this series seems to highlight Mycroft more than before.
He plays a major role, just like Mary.

Mary definitely causes problems; she's the stone that brings down everything. There are too many signs in the previous episodes to come to a different conclusion. She's being blackmailed, and she'll - whether deliberate or unconsciously - become this series' doom. She'll lead to the final problem in this episode.
Sherlock will be in trouble; series three focuses on him more than any other series before. While we saw events through John's eyes and occasionally got a glimpse what Sherlock was up to, we never truly saw the events from Sherlock's perspective. The audience remained just that whenever he was "on stage" without John. We were spectators.
In series three, Sherlock becomes our main focus; we experience The Empty Hearse and The Sign of Three through his eyes. Many have had problems to accept the change of style; they needed to rewatch the episodes to get comfortable with it. And that's why; we get more from Sherlock than ever before. The final problem will be a situation in which he will have to choose. And more than likely the decision will be harmful to himself.

And I believe it'll be Mycroft that covers for him. No matter what he stated in the trailer. I can't see Mycroft dying. I can see him lose his job, though. Or risk it.
Here I'll take a right dive into it: I can see Mycroft try to kill Magnussen.
There's a darkness in him, different from Sherlock. Mycroft is more deliberate, more detached. The only thing he has ever been emotional about is Sherlock; remember A Scandal in Belgravia? He was angry; at the same time, though, he was unable to outright blame his brother. He felt responsible for him, for the "mistake" Sherlock made. He was about to cover for Sherlock then, too.
Milverton, the character Magnussen is based on, was killed by someone he blackmailed. We haven't seen enough of him for his actual demise yet, but I think the cliffhanger this time will include a solution to the Mary dilemma, and it will show Mycroft take some sort of action, despite his words towards Sherlock. I could imagine him pointing a gun at Magnussen. I could. It would be the ultimate character exploration; clearly, he wouldn't shoot. Haven't seen enough of Magnussen. But there would be enough questions hanging in the air. What will make him retreat? What will that mean for his career? Magnussen is a powerful man. Will Mycroft be able to land a stalemate? Or will it cost his job?

I'd go so far to state that Magnussen is after Mycroft from the very beginning. Sherlock is Mycroft's weakest link, his weakness. Why would Magnussen be interested in Sherlock otherwise? Unlike Moriarty, he is not interested in riddles. The Bonfire Incident merely is a test run; to see which baits Sherlock will react best to. What makes him dance.

I love sub!Sherlock, and I love Sherstrade. There's a nice chemistry between them, and I can totally see Lestrade as Sherlock's guardian, or at least, guidance. In a relationship, Lestrade would be aware of the power he wields - and this short fic shows just that.

The Case of Developing Love

Title: The Case of Developing Love

Fandom: Sherlock
Characters: John/Sherlock (switch), Mycroft
Warning: NC-17, slash,
Length: Novella

It had been another boring Sunday when Mycroft walked into their flat and blackmailed John in order to force Sherlock to investigate a case for him. For Sherlock, this case is nothing special - just another one of Mycroft's "national security" cases. For John, however, it hits a little too close to home. As former colleagues and old memories resurface, John finds it harder to hide his emotions from an ever observant Sherlock.

John and Sherlock have hit a plateau in their relationship, but neither is willing to talk about it. When Lestrade comes in with a new and frankly urgent case, John and Sherlock are forced to define what they exactly are to each other... and how far they're willing to go for one another.

Moriarty has returned, and John knows it's only a matter of time before he comes after Sherlock. Stress is at an all-time high when a client comes calling. Surprisingly enough, Sherlock takes the case, and the two are whisked off to an estate in the countryside. Now undercover, John and Sherlock must rekindle their relationship in order to pull it off. But can things ever really return as to how they were before?

AO3

Basically Johnlock through three kinds of cases - each case introduces a new level of their relationship. I particularly liked the second case, but the other parts are good, too.

There's only one thing that can save the Empire from closing for good – the celebrity star of the BBC series Restaurant Reconstructed, Chef Sherlock Holmes.

AO3

Mind-blowing, and how come I have almost no warnings to tag? I don't believe it. Shame on me.
I love Mise en Place. I had no real expectations, even though I know azriona and I liked some of her previous works. Mise en Place has got many elements that "could" work, but also some that made me frown. I mean, seriously, Sherlock as a TV chef? I can see him tearing into people, yes. But I can't see him motivating the staff.
Azriona combines the series and the story by putting in quotes - which make you smile every time, just because you recognize them! I never felt like the AU world was overbearing or too vast to explore. A good AU, definitely.

Mary

No, not another rant.
So, first episode of third season's out - and I have some mixed feelings. Loved a lot, especially the fan service. Thanks, Gatiss! That really came as a surprise. I didn't see that coming.
Appearance of "Mommy Holmes"
Mycroft joking openly with Sherlock
Sherlock shown on his mission, half-naked and beaten
Anderson's shout "I believe in Sherlock Holmes!"
The different theories acted out

Did I miss something? Anyway, I consider most of those fan service, and I love it.

Now, in terms of Mary...
I've been opposed to her character from the beginning. That doesn't come as a surprise. She just seems like a disruptive presence.

I am still a bit uncertain about Mary. She's just like I imagined her. Nice and so on, but a bit plain. To me, still feels somewhat unlikely that the relationship would ever be "enough" for John.
Is it wrong to hope for Sherlock/Mary moments? Just to break through this perfectly boring relationship John/Mary portrays? I really like the thought of Mary telling John no in the very last second because she notices that this is not right for both of them. She's so... sensible. And I can't imagine her not realizing that she might be the one John comes home to in the end, but that they won't be happy in their old age. Because she won't be enough for him, then, when there are no more riddles to be solved, no more criminals to be caught.

Now, here's one thing I consider fishy: Sherlock deduces about Mary that she is a liar. It is important enough to mention:
Mary is a liar.
This deduction happens after he tells John that she in truth dislikes his moustache. It's not about that. So what's she lying about? Something he cannot deduce, apparently. Otherwise Sherlock would spill it.

What if Mary is a placed agent? One of Magnussen's?
There are two major problems I have with the Guy Fawkes incident:

Mary harrassed John into visiting Baker Street - where he was ambushed. On open street. This was no covert action, it was deliberate. They intended to take him then and there. If he had been under observation, why would they not grab John somewhere else? There must be a place, an alley, less open than Baker Street. Taking him in front of Baker Street is a symbol, it is by no means practical. The specific date also leads me to the conclusion that his attackers knew he'd be headed there.

The encoded message was sent to Mary's phone; why would Magnussen do that? In the message, there's no mention of Sherlock Holmes. Would he truly rely on a part-time nurse to by off-chance that it means something to go to Sherlock? He didn't include any hint in the message that she was to show it to him. And how did he get Mary's phone number? Let's assume Magnussen is almighty; why not contact Sherlock directly? Or do it via Mrs Hudson, who at least was in physical proximity to his actual target? - > I assume Sherlock was his target because Magnussen stopped the video when Sherlock alone was shown.
The Guy Fawkes incident gets even fouler; Mary runs to Sherlock, and she doesn't even mention whether she called John or noticed that he wasn't at home. She also didn't ask whether he was at Baker Street. She rushed into the house, right to Sherlock.
Next thing: when they ride the bike, suddenly the messages address Sherlock. This is proof that they are somehow under surveillance, yet the messages all talk about "here" being at the Chapel. To me, it seems like Mary was told to bring the message to Sherlock. That's why the next message is directed at him. Even though Magnussen apprently only has footage of Sherlock at the Chapel. Magnussen is not using CCTV; the angles are wrong. There are at least two cameras involved, one's from a person, it's not from an above perspective. Magnussen works with manpower.
The biggest problem I have, though, is: Why did Mary go to Sherlock? She knows the message. She tells Sherlock how to read it - so why would she, if she truly believed John to be in danger, run to Sherlock? It's a waste of precious time. She had to drive to Baker Street. When she gets the message, she's walking. So I assume there's a time gap. Why not phone Sherlock? She also isn't truly panicking. Imagine your partner seems to have disappeared, and someone tells you to go to a specific place; it seems urgent. Would you truly react the way Mary did?

I didn't notice all these details on the first go; it happened when I reviewed the episode and noticed the "liar" part. It just seems fishy.
On the other hand: If Mary was involved, why bother putting this message in code? It's not like it's a challenge for Sherlock, Mary's the one who solves it. Why admit to solving it when that's a far better cover to ask Sherlock for help?

Even so, I think the theory is justified for now. And it makes Mary much more interesting. I've read some fanfictions where John's girlfriend (Mary, sometimes Tina) turns out to be Moran or one of Moran's accomplices. If Mary ends up being like that, I'll probably be as happy as larry. Would be in Gatiss' new spirit of fan service.

There's one thing for sure; Magnussen is not interested in a powerplay with Sherlock. Guy Fawkes Incident is about seeing Sherlock perform. Making him perform. Magnussen doesn't truly care about John. The murder attempt is not motivated by hatred or jealousy, or whatever. It's just a manner to make Sherlock "dance", to put him under pressure. I doubt Magnussen cared whether John would die or survive. He wanted to have Sherlock on screen, and he wanted to observe him. The hints are well-timed, e.g. the one including the word "Guy" when they drive by the fire. It wasn't about a riddle, either. Maybe the riddle was only a safeguard; to make sure Sherlock would  take it serious.

One last crack fact why Mary must be Magnussen's:
have a look at his flat. Magnussen is a magician; or obsessed with magic tricks. And every magician needs a girl or two to cover up his game.
