Occam's Razor

Title: Occam's Razor
Author: RaeWhit
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Harry, Draco/Harry
Warning: NC-17, slash, BDSM, post-war, horcrux
Length: Novella
Status: Completed

Two years after the end of the war, only desperation could make Harry seek out the help of a one-time enemy.

At AO3

Finally. This is the story which introduced me to RaeWhit almost two years ago. Since then, I've been in love with it. RaeWhit here shows again how to introduce subtle hints - the actual turnabout is a surprise, even if you already had some inklings. I was sure that Snape somehow survived but like Harry, I was deceived and believed it was Bat. Drarry and Snarry in one, so basically two for one. Go for it. In my opinion, RaeWhit's best story.

Title: Filtered Past Boredom

Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters: Snape/Harry, Dumbledore
Warning: NC-17, slash, post-war, magic
Length: Medium
Status: Completed

Returning to Hogwarts to teach, Harry brings with him the disappointment of a life gone wrong and the expectation of a year filled with boredom. So he sets for himself a game of distraction: the seduction of Severus Snape.

God, anything left to say? Besides: RaeWhit?
I love post-war, and this just is a down-right favorite of mine. Both, Snape and Harry, are depicted a bit darkish, with a manipulative streak. And most enjoyable, it's Dumbledore who beats them at their own game. RaeWhit explores their dark sides in this, after putting them as equals by making Harry a professor, too. While the actual story is not that outstanding, there's the usual subtlety RaeWhit's reknown for.

After the war, it's Harry's own choices that place him in unimaginable circumstances.

At AO3

One of my favorite dark stories set after the actual war against Voldemort. It is rather realistic in some ways, in others a sound alternative but not really likely. This story is almost like a meta fic - it picks up several dark fic elements but doesn't revolve around them, it merely hints at them, such as Stockholm Syndrome. I recognize several psychological complexities in there, and unlike other authors, RaeWhit doesn't force it on you. They are there for the audience to see and think about, but do not become some sort of psychological thesis. This closely reminds me of Chrysalis. While Chrysalis lacks the dark mood, it also deals with several psychological aspects which are explored in a subtle manner.

It's been over four years since the end of the war, and Harry honestly doesn't know what he wants. Fortunately, someone else does.

At AO3

A bit of a borderliner. The story is not that unique but the structure is solid, the main idea, too. I can't find faults with the story but I felt it was a bit too easy to read for one of RaeWhit's works. Usually, there's a lot of subtlety inbetween the lines. This story lacked in that particular department but alas, it just didn't feel like one of RaeWhit's, this doesn't make it a bad fiction or lacking in comparison to other works.

You know, I had seriously problems placing this story. Best comedy-romance in HP? Or longest courtship? AU, in a way? Best of RaeWhit's stories?
Well, there's one sure thing, though. This story was a surprise. While I consider myself an Occam's Razor fan, I no longer can say that it is without doubt her best story. This one connects multiple "ideas" and a more modern approach (chatting, computer, phone) than her other works - yet the literary side did not suffer, there are plenty references. It's RaeWhit through and through, but a more playful one.

Well, the story is well-written but nothing special. I just felt like rec'ing because of the nicely interwoven literature. While it's not RaeWhit's magnum opus, it complements her other works nicely.

Belonging and deserving, needing and wanting--desires of the human heart that Severus and Harry must face when they're forced to the little village of Lochdubh to settle a very late codicil of Albus Dumbledore's will.

At AO3

This is a monster. And fit for a Snarry fanfiction. Many believe that in order to tell a proper Snarry Story, you need to write a novel at least. While I do enjoy short fiction, I completely agree with this notion. To get them "right" and deep enough to show their prospering relationship, you need time and space.
I am not a particular fan of "oh no, Harry has got family" besides the occasional Severitus story - but I didn't mind because here it isn't important. The author doesn't push the revelation to the front. This story isn't about Harry and Julian. It's about Snape and Harry, coping with the past, finding new prospects in their lives.

What if Harry had not been given the entire prophecy by Albus Dumbledore? Years later, forever changed by that second part of the prophecy, Severus and Harry are pulled together again, this time by a common love of flowers and gardens.

This easily belongs to the most memorable fanfictions I stumbled across. Well, can you stumble across RaeWhit? I dunno. I mean, they are one of the most rec'ed in the entire fandom. This story focuses on loss, grieving, aging and being an adult, as well as the issue of responsibility. While I love Snarry, this also hits just the topics I can see this pairing to be about. RaeWhit hit two favorite's of mine, especially with a hint of PTSD in there. The OC's were realistically depicted, something not many FF authors manage to do. I seriously felt with them when Winifred died.

Lucius Malfoy searches for the perfect moment from his relationship with Severus Snape.

At AO3

This story is unlike many depicting Snape. Usually, people try to focus on Snape himself when telling "their" story. Here, the author decided on Lucius who has fallen in love with a younger, not pleasant-looking half-blood boy. Snape. Lucius' perspective is rather painful as his feelings seem unrequited. I love it. His love is deep and not fixed on looks. He's positively smitten with Snape, though he needs some time to realize just that. The end wasn't what I quite expected but fine. It suited the story. I would have preferred to see some more Snape-child interactions but it's alright. It's one of those: not like you wanted it to happen, but still it turned out alright - stories.

I love 8th year fics. So, it's out. I came out of the closet XD I just think that the setting's really beautiful and a lot of angst and hope can bei conveyed simultaneously. There are no fixed developments, the end of the war can function as a turnabout. In that way, it's the best moment to start a fanfiction. This fanfiction alike chose to show a new angle. We see Draco who still bears the fruits of his death eater days. Mistrust. Then there's the angst he faces, the guilt he needs to work through. And in the end, the redeeming quality showing that hec can change, that he is not bound to remain the way he was before.

This story focuses on magic quirks. While it is definitely slashy, the relationship is not in the spotlight. This is a rather enjoyable 8th year fic and even though Harry also bottoms, I finished it in one session. The mystery is well-constructed and interesting, the solution not easy to see.

Well, I love oliversnape. Great author, great stories. Very forthcoming, too. I've had personal contact with oliversnape and it was rather inspiring. This novel-length story is very detailed and shows some typical signs of his craft: Snape meddling with "modern muggle devices", playing nintendo, etc. In a way, this seems OoC, but to me, this gives it a realistic vibe. This is not OoC,  this is just oliversnape's Snape. And that's fine.
Besides, nobody else would get me to read a story in which Harry is renamed into "John". This spins from year 3 to the end of year 4.

Snape's daily struggle with his life after Voldemort's fall. Back at Hogwarts, he is caught up between the students' dissatisfaction, Dumbledore's demands, lawsuits, grief and responsibility.

At AO3

This actually is part of a series, though I only am interested in "The Professor", not in the prequel. Snape's struggle after the war is often let out of fanfictions as Rowling revealed essential details quite late and even then it's up to a lot of speculation. This author managed to make his suffering quite real. While it sometimes seems like he's drowning in the issues around him, the writer succeeds to get him further. He changes, gets back to the surface. Step by step, Snape's turning into whom we know: canon!Snape. The development is very interesting to observe.

What happened during the three years Sherlock disappeared from Baker Street? A month by month of count of those years, including mysteries, family histories, some running, and one of the few other technically dead people living in the world: Irene Adler.

At AO3

Another Sherlock/Irene Story from me. Their interactions are very delicate in the majority of the story. It takes them a long  time to find some common ground to work with. Irene is depicted in a different light than most shed on her. Usually, people do not bother with her past. Here, it's her past that haunts them and makes it possible for Sherlock to get through to her.

1860. Change is in the air. John is a clergyman and former army chaplain, attempting to settle down in a country parish and lead a quiet life. But with Sherlock Holmes, reputed to be England's most dangerous religious controversialist, as the local aristocrat, what are his prospects of success?

At AO3

This leaves me kind of unsure of what to write.
I like the idea, I love the characters, I adore the Johnlock interactions.
Yet I do not approve of the way religious topics are dealt with. To me, a book is not supposed to judge - only characters may judge. To me, the author's influence is way too big, and the writer's kind of judgemental and doesn't leave enough room for doubt. A book may never attack a person's own beliefs. It should enrich the audience and show new ways of thinking but never close existing pathways. That's the problem I see here.
But don't get me wrong; this does not mean I didn't enjoy it. The writing's very good - I just fear that some people might be offended by the depiction of religion in here.

Sherlock Holmes is Gentleman Death in silk and lace-- a cold, cynical vampire ever-desperate for something to break the tedium of eternity. He finds it in Dr. John Watson, a depressed war-hero committing slow suicide through drink and the dangers of London's gambling dens.
Their strange friendship is fraught with difficulty from the onset-- but their lives truly take a turn for the macabre when they find themselves at the center of a gruesome (and infamous) murder spree.

At AO3

Vampires. God. I never thought I'd read something like that. Especially not set in Victorian Era. Screams "badfic". Seriously, though, this is like nothing I expected. The characters are interesting, in their own way unique, and Sherlock is rather complex. No badass vampire, no "angel". He's a vampire version of the canon Sherlock.
